Connecticut completes the sweep

Last year the University of Louisville had a chance to win both the NCAA Men's and Women's Championships.  The men took care of business,  knocking off a talented Michigan team 61-56 in the NCAA title game.  Louisville's women's basketball team could not finish the deal to complete the sweep.  Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies were not about to let that happen.  UConn demolished Louisville in last years championship game 93-60, giving Auriemma that all illusive eighth National Championship.

This year it was UConn (40-0) with the opportunity to follow up their male counterparts with an NCAA Women's Championship. UConn accomplished the feat 10 years ago when Diana Taurasi, Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor led the school to National Championships.  Geno came into the game a perfect 8-0 in the title game.  History was definitely on the Huskies side entering this match-up.

Muffet McGraw must have really provided UConn with additional motivation by not applauding Breanna Stewart winning NCAA Women's Player of the Year honors.  Stewart backed up her trophy with 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assist.  Stephanie Dolson was unstoppable on the block.  She dominated Notre Dames (37-1) front court with 17 points, 16 rebounds and seven assist.

Tonight's game was not reminiscent of two undefeated teams.  UConn was unstoppable in the second half in route to a relatively easy 79- 58 victory.

This was Notre Dames fourth Final Four loss in as many years.  They are certainly amongst the elite programs in NCAA Women's basketball.  However, UConn currently stands alone atop the women's game.

Geno is now 9-0 in National Championship games.  He now trails John Wooden by one for the most tournament trophies in history.  Geno my friend, you are now in some truly elite company.

UConn has now won 46 consecutive games, the third longest streak in school history.
